Frutiger is a widely used font; therefore, it does not add distinction to our brand appearance. The new ZEISS Typeface provides us with a distinctive signature element, just like our logo. Additionally, by owning our custom-made font, we do not need to continue to pay license fees.
No, there will be a transition phase of one year starting in July 2026 for the implementation of the new typeface, ZEISS Text. During this period, all new assets must utilize the new font. Existing assets will only need to be updated to the new typeface when they are edited and republished.
ZEISS Head is only for headlines and larger text. It is primarily intended for use in marketing communications. ZEISS Text is our standard font for all communications and applications at ZEISS. It is barrier free, easily readable, and automatically installed on ZEISS employees’ computers.
No, there are not. The font is our own ZEISS asset, and we can use it in ZEISS contexts whenever we want to.
Please see the distinction between the two fonts in the previous question.
Noto is used for language areas that are not yet covered by the ZEISS Typeface, for example in China, Korea, or Taiwan. These writing systems require an extremely large number of characters, which makes developing a custom font a very significant investment. At this stage, we are not able to cover all languages with the ZEISS Typeface, so we rely on Noto as a complementary font in those cases.
In such cases, we fall back on generic system fonts, which in our case is Arial. Therefore, please use Arial in everyday email correspondence.
ZEISS Head was not part of the global IT rollout process. ZEISS Head can be downloaded and installed manually via the Brand Portal/ZEISS Typeface/Resources.
Please do not download them from Google fonts. For Zeissians, Noto Sans with all language areas was also part of the rollout via IT. If a vendor or agency needs the font, they must register on the Brand Portal. Here, they can find all fonts in the resources page of the typography section.
The specific font for product labeling will be defined in the upcoming guidelines. More detailed instructions and recommendations on this topic will be provided in the near future. Please reach out to brand@zeiss.com or your Brand Experience Partner to get the latest guideline draft for your current projects.
No. Please have them register on the Brand Portal. This ensures that agencies can be informed about updated font files quickly, so that you don't have to do it yourself.
There will be a countdown and announcements before. If you have any issues with the removal due to an ongoing project, please let us know. The font ZEISS Frutiger Next W1G will still be downloadable until 2027 from the Software Center or the company portal.
The license for the current font, Frutiger, is set to expire at the end of 2028. After this date, the font will no longer be available for use in new projects or assets. To ensure compliance and continuity in our branding efforts, it is crucial to transition to the new ZEISS Typeface before the expiration date. During the transition phase, which begins in July 2026, all new assets must use the font ZEISS Text. Existing assets that were created while we owned the Frutiger license do not need to be changed.
No. Legally, older videos, PDFs, et cetera that use Frutiger do not need to be updated or deleted.
However, two rules apply:
The asset must have been created while we had the license – so before the end of 2028.
The font file itself must not be embedded in the asset. (A video, image, or PDF has no embedded font file. But a .html website or an app, for example, does have an embedded font.)
While our primary objective was not to design a typeface specifically for people with ADHD, the new font aligns well with many of the established criteria for ADHD-friendly typefaces. Thanks to its enhanced legibility, it is expected to perform better than ZEISS Frutiger in this respect.
If problems occur, we will provide a helping hand to smoothly change fonts in your assets.
